Miss Manners

Solana Bailey had a knack

For chewing when she ate a snack

Which all the grown-ups said was rude.

Her mom said, "Were you born in a barn?

You'd think we lived like pigs on a farm,

The way you chew your food."

Solana snickered and smacked as she chewed.

Decorum and etiquette she frankly eschewed,

And all the more especially when they "eeeew'd".

Then with even greater alacrity

Her lips as she ate went smackity.

Her oma said, "Halt! Close your mouth if you please."

Her teacher even begged her down on her knees.

But Solana Bailey would not give in.

Her father said it should be a sin

To eat with her mouth open wide.

The neighbors entreated, "Close your yap when you chew it."

The priest merely asked, "Why do you do it?

"Your behavior, we cannot abide!"

"There's no great mystery in eating like that,"

Chided her mother's great-great Aunt Pat,

"With 'see food' there's nothing to hide."
