The Golden Goose is Cooked

Once upon a time in a land far away,

a simple country farmer had a simple goose which lay

one simple golden egg each morning on the hay.

Hey dilly dilly, oh! Hey dilly dee.

The farmer's off to market with a goose upon his knee.

Hey dilly dilly, oh. Hey dilly ding!

With golden eggs, he soon was rich enough to be a king.

But then one day the farmer's heart was filled with blackest greed.

One golden egg each morn was not enough to sate his need.

And so he schemed and fell upon a bad idea indeed.

Hey dilly dilly oh! Hey dilly dregs.

The farmer killed the goose to get his hands upon the eggs.

Hey dilly dilly oh! Hey dilly deedy.

The farmer cooked his golden goose because he was too greedy.

Hey dilly dilly oh! Hey dilly doo.

Now he has no goose nor eggs and sups on cold goose stew.

(Yet another retelling of an old fable...there have been numerous versions of it since the first known version by Aesop. Many phrases are in use to this day in our language, such as "his goose is cooked" or "killing the golden goose" used to mean someone has been short-sighted in their actions which proved disastrous in the end.)
